A few days ago I wrote that I'm going to tell you about our favorite cities of our Europe tour. Me and my friend agreed that Lisbon was the absolute number one. Why, you ask? I'll tell you! This blogpost is about Lisbon and its charm we fell in love with..
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and has over 547,000 inhabitants. We visited this city on the 22nd of May, and the weather was amazing. Yes, it was hot and the sun shined all day long, but we endured it. Make sure that you take a break in the shadow now and then, and drink lots of water. Speaking of water, we weren't able to drink water from the crane. You could taste the chlorine very well, which wasn't that pleasant.. So we bought these huge bottles of water which we carried with us all day, it's a bit heavy but you're definitely going to need it. Thank me later!
Our hostel was right next to the train station (Lisboa Apolónia) and we were VERY thankful for that, because carrying an absurdly heavy backpack through the city when it's about 26 degrees celsius outside isn't a recommendation (shocker).

What to do in Lisbon?
We highly recommend to go to the beach! The only thing is that you have to take the metro and the train to get to a beach, because in Lisbon itself, there are only harbors. But it took us only half an hour to get there, so it was worth it. And we had a wonderful, relaxed day. We picked a small beach in Cascaís, because we didn't want to go to a very crowded beach. It even had a little restaurant/café where we had lunch while we were enjoying the sun in de fatboys. As you can see, we also climbed on the rocks to take some pictures. Be careful not to fall though, they can get very slippery and I almost threw my phone straight into the sea (yes, I happen to be the clumsiest person on earth, but still, be careful!).
The third day we went shopping (hey, girls will be girls, right?) at Centro Vasco da Gama and Centro Colombo. We had to take the metro again to get there, but luckily, it wasn't very expensive. If you looked at the roof of Centro Vasco da Gama, you could see water running down. It's wonderful to see, and because Vasco da Gama was an overseas explorer, a very suitable and creative detail too! When we went to the second shopping center, our jaws dropped. Centro Colombo is huge, the name even sounds immense. In fact, it is the biggest shopping center in Lisbon. You can find literally anything there. Tons of clothing stores, a floor with only restaurants, a fitness center, a cinema and even a kart race court on the roof! Enough said, right? We spent so much time in there that we almost missed our train to Madrid..
Finally, here are a few things you should keep in mind when going to Lisbon:
1. Do not accept weed or hash on the street (when offered). The amount of creepy, little men that want to sell you drugs shocked us. They'll go away when you just say no and turn your head.
2. As I said before, take a bottle of water with you! You don't want to get dehydrated when you try to enjoy your days in sunny, hot Lisbon. Especially if you go hiking, a large bottle of water is a must.
3. Take the metro! Of course, walking is a fun way to see and experience the city, but you'll be much faster if you take the metro. In that way, you'll be able to do and see so much more in one day. Our time in Lisbon was very scarce, so the metro was very useful in our case.
That's about it! Hopefully you enjoyed reading about our experiences in this magnificent city. Keep reading my posts if you want to know what we did and saw in Berlin and Milan, the other cities that made it to the top three!
Love,
Ruby
